On average, a single page consists of around 250 to 350 words without much formatting. But if it’s one thousand words, it will take a different number of pages depending on what type of document you want to create.
Most file types have a standard style that compels one thousand words to take up the supposed amount of pages. For e.g. The no. of pages for a thousand words in a letter or a magazine can be vastly different from a fiction novel or a children’s book.
How Many Pages is 1000 Words in Plain Text?
If you’re starting a blank document in MS Word, the default font is Calibri, its size is 11, and the line spacing is 1.08, which is only marginally bigger than single spacing.
If you fill the document with a thousand words in the default formatting, i.e., plain text, no headings or images, it’ll occupy exactly one and a half pages. Here’s an example of how it’ll look like when a thousand words are just plain text.
Similarly, if you’re using Google Docs, the default formatting isn’t much different from MS Word. On Docs, the font is Arial with its size of 11 and the line spacing is 1.15, slightly bigger than Word. So, if you were to write a thousand words in only plain text on Docs, it’ll take up two pages.
How Many Pages is 1000 Words With Formatting Styles?
Let’s move on by adding formatting styles to the default format example above to see the number of pages needed for 1000 words.
Line Spacing
One of the most distinguishing factors in determining the number of pages needed is line spacing. It’s because different line spacing sizes can take up different amounts of space in between lines on a single page. There are also different options to choose from, like Single, Double, Multiple, and so on. Additionally, you can also set a custom line spacing size.
Out of them, the single line spacing size is what takes up the least amount of space on a page. Whereas, double or multiple line spacing can require more pages.
Let’s refer back to the default format for 1000 words as shown above. If you want to keep the default formatting but only change the line spacing from single to double, it’ll take three pages instead of 1.5. If there are more paragraph breaks, it might need four pages.
Margin Sizes
The size of your margins is another important factor while writing 1000 words. You can select from different sizes, like Narrowed, Moderate, Wide, and more. Here are how many pages it’ll take as per different margin sizes and line spacing.
Margin Size | Font Size | Line Spacing | No. of Pages |
Narrow | 11 | Single | 2 |
Narrow | 11 | Double | 3 |
Narrow | 14 | Double | 4 |
Wide | 11 | Single | 3 |
Wide | 11 | Double | 4 |
Wide | 14 | Double | 7 |
Font Size and Style
The font size and style itself may not significantly change the number of pages needed if the changes are minimal. For e.g., going from the font Calibri to Ariel and size from 11 to 12 may not have a visible difference.
But font sizes like 14 or 16 may call for 6 to 8 pages for a thousand words. Here’s an example of how it’ll look like:
Similarly, thicker fonts, like Ariel Black with font size 11 will lead to 5 pages and if you change the font size to 14 or 16, it’ll be 8 and 11 pages respectively.
Regular or smaller fonts, like Abadi Extra Light or Bradley Hand ITC with size 11 will usually always need only 3 pages for 1000 words.
Images, Icons, Shapes
Let’s suppose we want to add media to a thousand-word content. If we further add one image to every single page, it’ll occupy anywhere from six to seven pages with a thousand words. If you want to reduce the size of the images and headings with single line spacing, you’ll need five to six pages. Small-sized icons or shapes may only show a minor increase in the pages.
Heading Styles
If we want to add one or two headings to every page, it won’t make any significant changes to the number of pages. But, if there are a lot of headings and a table of contents as well, there might only be one additional page. For instance, a thousand words with no images and default font size may need 3 pages.
How Many Pages is 1000 Words in a Book?
Along with the factors mentioned above that affect the number of pages, there’s an additional element when it comes to books. This is because the paper sizes of a book can very much differentiate how many pages you will require. Below is a table that shows an average of no. of pages needed for 1000 words based on paper size, font sizes, and line spacing.
Paper Size (inches) | Genre | Font Size | Line Spacing | No. of Pages |
A6 (4.1 x 5.8) | Novel | 12 | 1.0 | 9 |
A5 (5.8 x 8.3) | Novel | 12 | 1.0 | 4 |
A4 (8.3 x 11.7) | Children’s book | 12 | 2.0 | 4 |
6 x 9 | Textbooks | 12 | 1.5 | 6 |
